This tool uses AI to review ELS drawings against a 25-point quality checklist tailored to ecological lighting practice — covering title block completeness, luminaire coordination, bat-sensitive design compliance, circuit logic, and isoline presentation. The AI is briefed on ILP/BCT Guidance Note GN08/23.

What it checks

Title block completeness, drawing content and coverage, luminaire specification and schedule coordination, ecological sensitivity (GN08/23 compliance), presentation quality, and revision control. Checks adapt to the drawing type selected.

How to use it

Upload a drawing as a PDF or image, select the drawing type, and click Check. Results appear within 20–30 seconds with pass, flag, or fail against each criterion.

What the results mean

Flagged items include guidance on good practice. Failed items include a specific action. The overall assessment summarises readiness for issue.

Title block
1
Project name
Confirms which site the drawing relates to. Without this, drawings cannot be correctly filed or cross-referenced.

Drawing title
Describes exactly what the drawing shows — e.g. Site Lighting Layout, First Floor Layout, Luminaire Schedule. Must match the content precisely.

Drawing number
Enables the drawing to be tracked, cross-referenced, and retrieved. Required on every issued document.

Revision number and reason
States the current revision and the reason for the change. The reason must be specific — vague entries like "General revision" are not sufficient.

Issue status
e.g. For Construction, For Planning, For Comment. Tells the recipient how to act on the drawing and whether it is contractually binding.

Date
Confirms when the drawing was last updated. Required for audit trails and resolving version disputes.

Drawn by and checked by
Establishes who drew and who checked the drawing. Both fields must be completed before issue.

Scale stated
Required so distances can be interpreted correctly. Both A1 and A3 scales should be shown for plan drawings (e.g. 1:200 A1 / 1:400 A3).

Copyright notice
ELS drawings carry a copyright statement attributing ownership to Ecological Lighting Solutions. Confirm it is present on every issued sheet.
Drawing content

Site boundary and drawing extent
The boundary of the lighting scheme must be unambiguous. Nothing should be cut off at the drawing edge.

Key/legend present and matching
Every luminaire type, circuit line, PIR sensor, and direction arrow on the drawing must appear in the key — and vice versa. Mismatches cause installation errors.

All luminaires labelled with type code
Each fitting must carry its type code (e.g. WL1, FL2, STL1). Unlabelled fittings cannot be cross-referenced with the luminaire schedule.

Mounting height notes present
Where mounting height is critical to performance or ecology compliance (e.g. WL1 at 400mm, WL2 at 1850mm), a note must confirm this on the drawing.

Circuit lines and numbers complete
All circuit lines must be drawn and numbered. The numbering sequence should be logical and complete with no gaps.
Luminaire schedule & specification

Cross-reference to luminaire schedule
The drawing notes should confirm that it is to be read alongside the luminaire schedule. This is a standard ELS requirement per the drawing notes.

PIR and switching/control notes
Switching arrangements — PIR control, timed switch-off, solar operation — must be documented in notes on the drawing or cross-referenced to the schedule.

Direction of light arrows (if applicable)
For directional or asymmetric fittings, the intended beam direction should be shown with an arrow. Particularly important for spike lights and wall washers.

Solar/passive fittings identified (if applicable)
Solar-operated fittings (e.g. FL2) do not require electrical circuits. These must be clearly distinguished from mains-powered fittings in both the drawing and key.

Street lighting tilt/rotation noted (if applicable)
Where street lighting calculations assume a specific pot-top tilt (typically 0°), this should be confirmed in the drawing notes to avoid site variation.
Ecological sensitivity — GN08/23 compliance

Bat roost / corridor / Key Habitat noted (if applicable)
Per GN08/23 Step 3: any known bat roosts, flight lines, or Key Habitats must be identified on the drawing so their relationship to the lighting scheme is clear. No illumination of roost entrances or Key Habitats.

Warm-white / low CCT referenced
GN08/23 recommends warm-white LEDs (2700K or lower) to reduce blue light component harmful to bats and invertebrates. Check this is documented in notes or cross-referenced to the luminaire schedule.

Light spill mitigation addressed
Louvres, shields, or directional optics used to prevent light spill into sensitive areas should be noted or referenced to the schedule. GN08/23 requires avoidance first; mitigation second.

Isoline / lux contour legibility (if applicable)
Per GN08/23 Step 5: where isolines are shown, lux contour lines must be legible and labelled with values. Contours for 0.2, 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 lux should be clearly visible. Each plan should show min/max lux values.
Presentation & revision control

Annotation legible at output size
ELS drawings are typically issued at A1 (1:200) and A3 (1:400). All labels, notes, and key text must remain readable at both sizes. Overlapping annotation must be resolved.

Revision history complete and accurate
Revision number, reason, and date must all be present and consistent. The revision reason must describe the actual change specifically — not just "General revision".
